A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using these medications should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
